SciVet - The bradizoit way
The life cycle of Neospora is much like the Toxoplasma spp. hence the identity crises before 1988. There are 3 infectious stages:
Tachyzoites are a prolific stage concerned with numbers allowing expansion of the infection from cell to cell including vertical transmission through the placenta and milk. Mostly to blame for the clinical sings tachyzoites are like a child on sugar raging against the system.
Bradyzoites can be found inside tissue cysts (20 – 100 units), in the CNS and muscle of the IH and the DH. Bradyzoites are mostly concerned with passing undetected by the IS the cyst wall is meant to allow the bradyzoites to survive the GI track of the DH.
The Oocyst are round, hard, and small, can only be produced in the GI track of the DH. These are passed in the stools unsporulated and sporulate once outside turning int to an infective unit. Oocysts are built to endure the elements and infect DH or the IH. The resistance of oocysts are not well known but assumed similar to T. gondii.
